This grapevine was a recorded conversation with Sarah Burke of Phoenix Arizona. She is originally from the area and will be doing a Bar to Bar-Bra bike ride on Saturday, July 31st. The ride is from the Fontanelle Bar to Greenfield Bowl. During the ride she will be completing various dares. The first $350 she raises will be used towards the completion of a memorial painting that will be hung at the Adair County Hospital in honor of her Mother, who worked at the hospital for years and passed away due to Huntington's Disease. The rest of the money she raises will go to Huntington's Disease Research.

Guest:Rich Paulsen — McKinley Park Festival
The McKinley Park Festival will take place on Saturday, July 31st. The Day starts off with a kids fishing contest. Sign up is from 8:30 until 9:15. Kids 16 and under are invited. Lunch and prizes will be awarded from 11:30 until 12:30. There will be plenty of kids activities as well going on from 11 until 5 pm. There will be a water slide, Horse Carriage Rides, a bubble gum blowing contest and a pie eating contest. The Bike Parade will take place at 1:00 pm. The Bill Riley Talent Show will start at 2 pm. There will be a hog roast dinner starting at 4 pm until its gone. There will be an auction starting at 6 pm. All proceeds go to the McKinley Park Fundraiser. There will also be a raffle for a 47 inch TV, and tickets are $1. Barcode will play at 8 pm, at which time there will be an ugly shirt contest going on. The night is capped off with a fireworks show at 10pm. There will be swimming all day for $1.00 and the Historical Complex will be open all day.

There will be an Arts and Cars event taking place on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31 in Corning in conjunction with the Doctor's Dash. This is the 4th year for the event. On Friday, the In Plain Air Artists will be in town. They start transforming canvass's on Friday and are completely done with them on Saturday afternoon. This will take place at Central Park. Friday is the Day of the BBQ cook off as well. There is still time to enter this contest. At 3 the beer garden starts, a BBQ sampling, a dance and a DJ round out the night in Corning. On Saturday the Doctor's Dash kicks off the events. There will the Rotary's Pancake Breakfast on 7th street. All of the donations to the pancake breakfast go to Polio Plus. Johnny Carson's birthplace will be open from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday. At 10 am, the Arts and Cars Parade starts. There is a lunch in the park from 11:30 until about 1. The Corning Winery is having a wine tasting. The Car Show Awards begin at 2:30 pm. There will be Inflatables for the kids this year.

This morning was the drawing for the driver of the demo car for the Union County Fair on Sunday, July 25 at 7:30 pm. The driver of the car will be Doug Pruvett.
The club is also in the process of making a PSA film that they hope to debut at the Union County Fair this weekend. The film is called Kick Butt, and focuses on Kick Butt day which was this past march. For any information on the Sparks club or Americor, you can call 782-5938 for more information.

Guest: Heather Scarbury- Elm's Club Bike Night
The 2nd annual Elm's Club Bike night will be held on Friday, July 23rd starting at 4 pm with Kamikaze Entertainment providing entertainment until 8 pm. Food, including pulled pork and potato salad will be available for $5 a plate. All proceeds will go to the McKinley Park Fundraiser. Golden Eagle Distributor will provide the adult refreshments for this events. There are T-Shirts available at the Elm's Club for $10. Parking is available in front of the Elm's Club or the parking lot at Elm and Montgomery. This is a family event from 4 to 8 pm. Last year there were 150 bikes and they hope to double that number this year. There will be a street dance with Barcode starting at 8 pm.

The Lenox Rodeo Parade and Fun Night will be on Wednesday, July 21. The parade is usually around 2 hours long and starts at 7 pm. Line up will be at the school and there is no registration necessary. Before and after the parade, the Chamber is putting up blow up equipment, a slide, a bounce house and there is a charge for that. Food available will be pork and beef burgers, hot dogs, BBQ, pizza, pie, ice cream, popcorn, funnel cake, sno cones and cotton candy. There will also be mini golf, and water games with the Lenox Fire Department. These events will run until about 10 pm. The rodeo is Thursday through Saturday. It starts with Mutton Busters, for ages 5-8, and Steers for ages 9-14. These events start at 7 pm all three nights. You will need to register early as there are a limited number of entries. Thursday is the Rodeo Queen Coronation at around 7:30 pm. The rodeo starts at 8 pm each night and includes all standard rodeo events. Saturday night is the Rodeo Dance with the Rumley Brothers at the Legion uptown. Cost for the dance is $5 for a couple and $3 for single and starts around 10 pm that night. Breakfast is also served Friday and Saturday night after the rodeo at the arena. Cost for the rodeo is $7 for adults and $3 for ages 5-12. Sunday at 10 am is the youth rodeo, and all of these events will be held rain or shine.

Open swim is available MWFS from 1-4 and on TTR from 1-5 as well as Friday from 6-7:30. Adult Lap Exercises are open from 11-1 Monday through Saturday and from 5-6 Monday through Friday. There are plenty of water aerobics classes available throughout the day. There are also fitness classes available all day long at different times, these include yoga, Pilates, cardio and more. Summer is almost over and the YMCA is offering an after school program, 5 days a week until 6pm. Kids can enjoy crafts, swim 2 days a week. September 18th is the 5-k Balloon Chase Run/Walk at 8 am. You can pre register through September 16th for $15 or you can register up until the race for $20. Celebrate Icaria will be held on Saturday, July 17 at the colony site 3 miles east of Corning. All events at the colony site will be free. The annual meeting starts at 10 am in the Refectory, Communal Dining Hall. Lunch will be available on the grounds. There will be guided tours of the historic 1878 Icaria Refectory and the 1860 School House. There will be musical entertainment and Heritage Craft demonstrators in several areas. Children's activities include kite flying, face painting and a variety of 19th century games and stories enjoyed by the Icaria children. Informative presentations will run from 1 pm until 4 pm. Peter Hoehnle, Project Manager for the Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council will speak. Bill Sherman will present some Special Iowa Country Schools. A program with state and local dignitaries is scheduled at 4 pm to celebrate the work to date at the museum site and will conclude activities at the site. In the evening the festivities move to Corning with a wine and cheese reception followed by a dinner and a program at Saint Patrick's Parish Center. The Adair County Fair will start on Wednesday, July 21st. Wednesday is free admission,there is a silent auction, and Pump Town will provide music to go along with the BBQ. Thursday the swine show starts at 8 am. There will also be a horse show and the Grandstand event will be Impact Pro Wrestling. Friday is Senior day for people aged 60 and up. There will be a Toby Tent Show, and Bingo. It is also the day for dairy and goat showings. The Balloon Lady will be there on Friday as well. The grandstand event that night will be Motocross and ATV races. Saturday is Beef Day, there will also be helicopter rides as long as the weather permits. The grandstand event for Saturday night is the always popular Demo Derby. To wrap up the fair on Sunday, it is sheep day, there will be a pig tail contest and the auction starts this year at 2:45 pm. The grandstand event will be the mud bog. The night and fair wrap up with a teen dance. The Sparks Club is working on a Demolition Derby Car, and will be raffling of donation tickets to see who will drive the car at the Union County Fair Demo on July 25th. Tickets are available at local church, banks, Napa. And Hulett and Son Auto Salvage. Salem Lutheran Church and First Presbyterian Church are putting on a Bible School From July 11th through July 16th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church. Marilea talked about the 11th Annual Doctors Dash that will be held in Corning on Saturday, July 31st. Entry fee is 10 dollars if registered by July 22nd, and 15 dollars after that. This year there is a 5K/10K runs and a 5K walk. There is also a 1 Mile Walk, and a 1 Mile Youth Family Walk as well. Early Registrants are guaranteed T-Shirts. The Family Walk entry fee is 25 dollars per family. The proceeds for this event support the Community Wellness Summer Kids Camp. She also discussed some events that are going on in Corning that weekend. Friday and Saturday there is a Arts and Cars event, a street dance on Friday night, a car show, a parade on Saturday. Ellen talked about the cancellation of some of the 4th of July festivities from the past weekend. The parade will not be reshcheduled, but the bike parade will take place on July 31st at 1 p.m. as part of the McKinley Park Festival. The fireworks were also rescheduled for July 31st as well. She also talked about Creston Bike night, which will be held on July 23rd at the Elms Club in Creston.
The Farmers Market takes place every Monday afternoon through September. Crazy night and Days will happen starting on August 5th. There will be a drawing between 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. and the prizes will be Creston Bucks. Fareway will be serving dinner there on Maple Street with all proceeds going to support MDA. June was the first yard of the month. Three yards were honored: Yards are honored in the months of June, July, August, September and sometimes October, depending on th e weather. Also discussed were the Area of the Month, Flower Pot of the Month, the High Five, the Gold Star and the Gold Star Business.

The Creston Friends of the Library will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair on July 3rd and July 4th. All Proceeds go to the Creston Friends of the Library activities such as the summer reading program. The fair is also featuring an appearance by Clifford the Big Red Dog. Charlie Westman---Habitat for Humanity of Union County
Habitat for Humanity of Union County is looking for the next family. Construction is set to start on their 4th house in Creston this year, with a target date of Christmas 2011 completion. he house will be located at 801 West Jefferson Street. Westman talked about the house that was completed in Creston last year. The Habitat house that was completed last year had three bedrooms, and was assessed at $92,000, but the new owners are paying on close to half of the actual cost of the house. He also talked about the requirements of being selected. Interest people can call 641-782-4590 or attend attend the meeting on July 13th at 6:30 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.
