Counties Declared Disasters

by Michael Cooley

A second declaration disaster for Iowa from President Barack Obama includes two counties in the Creston Radio listening area. President Obama issued the statement regarding the severe winter storm and ice storm that hit in mid-January. The declaration allows for local and state governments, including municipal utilities, to receive financial aid in the cost for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.

Adair and Madison counties are both covered under the latest declaration. Adair was already declared a disaster for damages sustained in the Christmas winter storm. The public assistance program covers some of the cost for the disaster. The declaration allows any Iowa counties to apply for assistance through the Hazard Mitigation Grant program, which helps pay for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards.
